1-18-09 Sunday setlist
Wow, what a weekend… and I don’t necessarily mean that in a good way… but not necessarily in a bad one either. Friday night brought with it a pre-migraine that is one of the worst I have ever had, and I wasn’t sure if I would even be at church, much less leading worship on Sunday! But, I sent the call to prayer out to God’s people, and He provided! Praise the Lord!
Saturday was still iffy, but I just took it easy and tried not to do anything that would make the headache worse. Just sat in a chair and collected dust. I think there is still a pile of dust bunnies sitting on my nose today.
But Sunday morning I woke up and felt… better! Yay! So I packed everything up, got ready and headed out the door for church. Well, I made it through the rehearsal before the first twinges started. At those first twinges I took some medication to try to head it off… and it sorta worked.
I made it through 3 songs before the pain arrived. Suffice to say I bombed the last couple songs, but I think only the team knew it. Bless them - they are such good followers! As far as I could tell, the congregation was able to truly enter into a time of fellowship with our Father, and that is the ultimate goal, no?
So, here was our set list from yesterday…
- Hosanna (Praise is Rising) [E]
- Everlasting God [G]
- Praise Adonai [Em]
- Indescribable [Bm]
- children’s message
- He Reigns (Newsboys) [E]
- announcements
- message
- Communion Time
- Jesus Blood (Martin Smith) [G]
- taking of communion
- Doxology (acapella)
We were planning to do the verse & chorus of Praise Adonai at the end of the service, but Pastor Chris chose instead to lead us in the Doxology. I think it was a good choice! Unfortunately, I’m not sure that Jesus Blood was quite the correct song for yesterday - it just didn’t seem to fit with the rest of the service (but that could have been the headache too). I just remember thinking of 3-4 other songs that would have fit so perfectly given the message and the communion time that followed the song - not that I can remember what they were now!
As for the songs… Praise is Rising was a new one for the congregation, but they picked up on it quickly, and were belting it out by the end. Praise Adonai is one we haven’t done in ages, but I think most people remembered it well enough. Everlasting God & Indescribable are well known and well loved, so everyone was able to really join in and worship our amazing God!
He Reigns was used for the kids song this week, and we gave them all wooden percussion instruments to play along. They really enjoy that! We had them stop playing during the chorus and sing along… and most of them followed that leading. My daughter was having too much fun trying to come up with intricate rhythms… and staring at ME instead of the kids worship leader, so there was still some “noise” during the chorus. Good thing she’s cute! I was rather wishing we had NOT used the instruments t that point due to the headache… but I survived it, and they had a great time praising God.
I wish I could share more about the service - I know we were in Psalm 73 - but I honestly can’t remember too much of it. I know that the message spoke to me… but the pain kept getting more and more intense and yesterday I came home and slept. I don’t remember much more than that.
I do want to thank the members of our church, my family and the great worship leaders over at TheWorshipCommunity that were lifting me up in prayer! I don’t think I would have made it through any of yesterday without their prayers!

Wow! You guys got to do a lot of songs.
Amazing day all round Jennifer - and with “Jesus Blood” too (even if you didn’t feel it fitted - hopefully is was just the headache :-). That song floors me everytime.
Steffanie,
We always get an extra song on Communion Sunday… just wait until next week when I post our communion and prayer service (all but 15-20 minutes is music). They are my favorite services (from a selfish standpoint - just spending time worshiping and praising God without announcements, etc. getting in the way)
It’s funny - it doesn’t feel like that many songs because they are broken up - 4 here, 1 or 2 there… I often forget that we sing 6-7 songs each week.
It’s funny… I seem to be the only person who noticed any of the issues I felt. Everyone else I’ve talked to felt that our time of singing praise to God was very powerful. It is when we decrease that He increases! Isn’t that the way it seems to work…
Jesus Blood is one of those songs that just hits at the heart for me too - just letting go and relying on Him for everything, and remembering the sacrifice that bought our freedom to approach God’s holy throne.
