Promote Reading

I have recently joined this group, and I must say that it is a great idea! I found my husband a book that he was getting ready to buy, and we were able to pass on a few well-loved books of our own – the bookshelf downstairs is big, but we still have too many books!

If you love to read – or know someone who does – you should take a look! Go quickly – if you join before October 5th you get 3 free book credits for the 1st 9 books you post – after that you will get 2 cedits for the 1st 10 books.

Each credit allows you to get a free book from another member – you get a credit for each book that you send out.

Check it out!

Plastic Bags

I hae recently begun to have a greater dissatisfaction with the overuse of plastic in our culture. EVERYTHING is packaged in plastic, and it is all thrown away almost instantly. One of the worst is the plastic bags you get from the grocery store, Target, etc. the things are everywhere – stuck in fences & trees, billowing down the road, floating in our waterways, etc. This got me to thinking… is there anything I can do to help cut down on the amount of plastic that my family is contributing?

I did think of something – and I made up a fabric grocery bag that I can take with me to the store and use instead of plastic bags. Do I get wierd looks from time to time? Sure, but I know that I am doing something to help – and my grocery store gives a rebate if you bring your own bag – that makes it double plus good!

Another side bebefit of using a fabric bag that I bring with me is one that helps the pocket book… now when I go grocery shopping, I keep in mind that I have 1 or 2 bags that I need to fit everything into… sure cuts down on the crap that gets thrown into the cart! I also remind myself that I will be carrying whatever I purchase in 1 trip -in 1 bag.

Are you looking at this too? Are you looking for tips to help you get started? I found this lens on squidoo that I thought I’d share… http://www.squidoo.com/NoPlasticBags/

Another thought for those not ready to take this plunge… my kids school has a plastic bag recycling program (that few schools know is available) and they raised almost $5,ooo last year – their first year doing it – to be used for the school. Find out if your kids school or a school in your area has heard of this program (I think they go through Wal-Mart) and take your bags there!

JUST DON”T THROW THEM AWAY
